Town of Topeka receives $1.23 million grant for road improvements

Topeka, IN. (July 7, 2010) —  The Town of Topeka, in collaboration with the Region III A Development and Regional Planning Commission, was approved for a grant on Wednesday in the amount of $1,230,150 by the Economic Development Administration (EDA).   The total cost of the project is estimated to be at $2,050,250, with the remaining portion of the cost to be paid for by local funding.

The grant will be used to conduct road improvements on County Road 700 West. Spanning from Morrow Avenue to State Road 5, the road will be widened by adding 6 feet of driving pavement to each side of the road. The project will also include the replacement of portions of the water main. The estimated start date of the project is the first week of August 2010, and the project is anticipated to be completed by the end of 2011.

“This funding will help ease traffic and will improve the infrastructure of our community” said Yvonne Eash, Topeka Town President. “The project will not only improve the overall visual appearance of the community, but it will also bring enhanced safety and traffic flow to our commuters.”

Topeka Town Manager Larry Schrock said that although detours will be set up to reduce congestion, engineers plan to try and keep one lane open on the road at all times. “The project will help to ease traffic congestion and make the roads safer by providing greater separation between the industrial area traffic and our Amish buggy traffic”, Schrock said.

“We are pleased to learn of the grant given to the Town of Topeka for this project” said Keith Gillenwater, Executive Director of the LaGrange County Economic Development Corporation. “The road improvements will not only greatly improve Topeka’s infrastructure, but will improve the main route for heavy truck traffic from Topeka’s growing industrial areas. It is a great win for the Town of Topeka.”
