LaGrange County EDC Presents New Plan for Economic Development

LaGrange, IN. (July 12, 2011) — The LaGrange County Economic Development Corporation (EDC) will be hosting a meeting to invite the public’s comment on a new economic development plan for the county.  The meeting details are as follows:

Lakeland High School Auditorium, Monday, July 25th, 6:00 P.M.

At the meeting, LaGrange County residents will be able to review and discuss the draft plan’s long-term vision, goals, and objectives.  The draft plan will be available for review in advance on the LCEDC website at

Work on the plan began in January and is nearly completed.  A final public hearing will be held at the LaGrange County Commissioner’s meeting on August 15th at 9:00 A.M.  Printed copies of the plan will be available for review at all county public library branches ten days prior to the August 15th meeting.

LaGrange County EDC staff and the planning steering committee sought extensive public input in the development of the plan.  Community members and regional stakeholders participated in focus groups, key informant interviews, and a half-day economic summit, in addition to a public input meeting at Lakeland High School.  In addition, citizens and other stakeholders submitted nearly 150 responses to the public questionnaire on the county’s economic climate.

“Many of the goals and objectives in the plan come directly from what we heard in the focus groups, interviews, and the economic summit,” said Keith Gillenwater, Executive Director of the LaGrange County EDC.  “We listened to what local stakeholders in business, education, tourism, and the Amish community wanted for LaGrange County and made that our priority.  This plan isn’t just for the EDC, it is for the whole county.”

LaGrange County Government partnered with the LaGrange County Economic Development Corporation (EDC) to create the new economic development plan.  The community selected Strategic Development Group, Inc. (SDG) to facilitate the planning process.

LaGrange County received a $49,500 award from the Indiana Office of Community of Rural Affairs (OCRA) to conduct the economic development plan.  OCRA provides these awards through its Community Focus Fund which receives dollars from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).  The goal of the program is to encourage cities, towns, and counties to plan for long-term community development.

The economic development plan includes:

·         A long-term vision of the community’s economic future

·         A set of prioritized goals and objectives and a projected budget – income and expenses

·         A plan with written text and appendices fully documenting the planning process, various sources and types of input, and expected actions and results

·         Action plans detailing responsible agencies, time schedules, and benchmarks

·         A schedule and process for plan revision and updating
